Description

The trees stand tall and stately,
surveying their domain
The first to glimpse the sunrise;
the first to feel the rain.

The idea to this photograph is brilliant, the execution is also very good, and yet there is a little quibble I have with composition.

The vision of a forest panorama from inside the forest is excellent, it gives both an idea of the feeling one has there, the shades of light, the shapes of the tree trunks, the shades of green, the different stages of growth. I also don't recall seeing something quite like it before.

I don't see any issues with technique per se, other than the light is relatively uniform in color and that is maybe a bit odd, given the wide angle of view. My main issue is with composition though, and I know that in a natural scene that spans such an angle it is very hard to control. The right part is the most powerful to me, the conical tree trunks and the misty light. The left part with the younger trees and bushes also works somehow, and has a graduated rise from center to left. But the center itself does not really have a strong presence or meaning. The lone tree trunk dead center is featureless and stands alone in a way that does not work for me. It may have been better if it hadn't been there at all maybe, but ideally the center should hold something of importance to the image, something that binds the two clearly different sides, right and left.

So the impact the image has on me is somewhat divided. At first I am impressed, but there is a little hitch that never quite goes away. That being said, it still is a powerful image.
